Markray released due to injury

Veteran pitcher hopes to return later this season

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Shreveport-Bossier Captains released opening day starter Thad Markray yesterday due to right arm tendinitis. The move frees up a roster spot for the Captains, but does not rule out Markray coming back to pitch for Shreveport-Bossier in 2009.

Markray was 3-7 in 11 starts this season with a 5.80 ERA. After a strong start to 2009, the righty from Springhill, La., lost three straight starts despite pitching well, before winning his next two to get back to .500. But Markray has since lost four straight starts and has been bothered by the tendinitis.

While no return date is currently on the calendar, Markray and the Captains hope for a reunion in August.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains begin a three-game series agains North Division first-half champion Wichita on Friday, July 10, at 7:05 p.m., with 1st Choice Personnel Batting Helmet Giveaway Night. Captains get another big ninth to stun AirHogs

Seven runs in final frame erase early 7-0 hole

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas. – For the second game in a row, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains got off to a slow start offensively, getting shut out in the first five innings by Kieran Mattison of the Grand Prairie AirHogs. Meanwhile, starter Luke Massetti was less than effective, getting knocked around for six runs in the first inning and another in the fourth. But the suddenly explosive late-game offense of the Captains showed up for the third time in four days, as Shreveport-Bossier got five runs in the sixth to get back into it, and scored seven more in the ninth to erase a 10-6 deficit and pull out a 13-10 win Wednesday afternoon at QuikTrip Park.
